Love is More than a Word, Chapter 65: New enemy, Old Regret (2)...
The ride was bumpy but Tao Mo slept surprisingly soundly well. When the carriage stopped, Gu-She could even hear a slight snore.
“Young Master." The door was thrown open.
Gu-She's brow furrowed, Tao Mo had sat up in shock and was filled with confusion, it took awhile for him to come to his senses, “Ah, here we are?”
Hao Guozi said: “It's supposedly here.”
Tao Mo hunkered down and dug outside, his feet sticking out of the carriage compartment, then suddenly looked back at Gu-She and said, “Was I just dreaming or...”
Gu-She looked back at him, unruffled.
Tao Mo smiled a few times in disappointment, saying, “It was a dream.” He stretched out his legs and was about to jump, when he heard the words, “Let me help you.”
One foot was already down but the other foot was still in the carriage because of the words and the stranger on both feet caused Tao Mo to fall down with no weight. Luckily, Hao Guozi was standing right next to him and hurriedly held him up with his arm, which saved him from a nasty fall. However, he was still in quite a mess.
Tao Mo jumped several times on one foot and only stood firm on both feet but when he looked up, he saw Gu-She getting out of the carriage. The joy that emerged was frozen by the difference between the cold outside and the place before it could be warmed up.
Good thing Gu Xiaojia wasn't here, no one was making fun of him, so the storm passed without a hitch.
The three of them are heading downstream along the river.
Sang Xiaotu drove the carriage, following them.
Hao Guozi said, “This is the middle of nowhere, not even mosquitoes, where are the passersby? Not to mention the witnesses.”
Tao Mo: “Maybe someone was in a hurry to get by, or...”
Gu-She said, “What time was the crime?”
Tao Mo had a good memory and recalled at once, “The magistrate mentioned it during the trial, it was sometime after midnight.”
Hao Guozi said, “Ha. In the middle of the night, there are even fewer people!”
Gu-She said, “Since no one was around in the middle of the night, how could the woodcutter ambush them on the road?”
Hao Guozi was startled, then said, “Because he's not the real killer, he's just a scapegoat.”
Gu-She eyed him faintly.
It dawned on Tao Mo: “It's the suspicion of the case.”
Hao Guozi was energized: “How about using it to force the County Magistrate to retrial?”
Gu-She: “Insufficient.”
Hao Guozi sighed, “Who goes to work in the wilderness in the middle of the night? Even if they do, I'm afraid they have something unspeakable to hide, so where would they admit it?”
Tao Mo was startled: “Unspeakable? What's so unspeakable about it?”
Hao Guozi's ears turned red and he numbly said, “Don't you often read novels about how no one is around at night, how the grass is deep, how the moon is shining, how the waves are rolling?”
Tao Mo was at a loss: “What does this have to do with something unspeakable?”
Hao Guozi faltered and couldn't cope, so he looked at Gu-She.
Gu-She said: “The woodcutter would have been found to be the scapegoat for a reason. He most likely lives nearby.”
Hao Guozi turned his head and looked around, “If he's a woodcutter, he should be living in the mountains. But what good would it do to find his place? In a place like this, you wouldn't have several families living together, would you?”
Tao Mo said, “Now that you're here, why don't you take a look around, just in case there's a clue left behind.”
When Hao Guozi heard that, he told Sang Xiaotu to come down and ran up the hill.
Tao Mo peeked at Gu-She.
Gu-She was standing by the river, looking at the water, wondering what she was thinking.
“It's a bit cold today.” Tao Mo blurted out a phrase for no apparent reason.
Gu-She gave him a sideways glance and answered with a look.
Tao Mo's heart throbbed a bit and he was about to say something else when Gu-She turned suddenly pale and pushed him away.
There was a flash of silver.
Tao Mo watched as blood burst out of Gu-She's arm!
It's an arrow!
Tao Mo froze and lunged at Gu-She without thinking.
Gu-She didn't seem to expect him to jump at her, caught him with both hands and then they both fell down.
Two more arrows came but they were cut off halfway.
Gu-She looked to the side in pain.
A man out of nowhere is attacking the archer and they're fighting.
“How are you?” Tao Mo's voice is out of tune, shaking like a leaf.
Gu-She was pale in his lips, trying to steady his breath, “You... Get up.”
Only then did Tao Mo notice that he was on top of his opponent and quickly stood up on the ground, before helping Gu-She again.
Gu-She had a cold sweat on his forehead. He was used to being a pampered man but this was a first for him and he was speechless with pain.
With that look on his face, Tao Mo was even more nervous. He swallowed desperately and said, “I'll take you to the doctor.”
Gu-She looked at the entangled assassin and chivalrous man and slowly nodded his head.
Tao Mo rushed to the carriage.
In fact, the carriage is the first time since he was born, he sat on the horse and imagined Gu Xiaojia and Hao Guozi's faces, swinging the reins but the horse did not move. He has never hated his own incompetence as much as he does at this moment.
“Hold the reins.” Gu-She frowned as she came to the carriage shaft, one arm supporting the carriage.
Tao Mo looked at Gu-She near at hand, anxiety suddenly settling in, a shake of the reins and a shout, “Drive.”
The horse tried pulling the carriage slowly along.
Tao Mo's memory is amazing but he fell asleep on the whole way here, so he quickly lost his way. Fortunately, Gu-She was there to guide him when he was at a loss. Even so, he had to make a lot of unnecessary trips because he was not very good at driving the carriage.
In the next county, the streets are filled with the aroma of food, the carriage is crowded and people come and go.
Tao Mo's hands became more and more tied and he didn't dare to let go of his hoof. Luckily, the medical clinic was not far away and Gu-She didn't wait for him to stop the horse but she jumped off, making him break out in a cold sweat again. With the help of others, Gu-She managed to place the carriage on the horse and Gu-She's wound was already bandaged. The doctor was holding a prescription for medicine but when he turned around and saw him coming in, he was shocked, he put the medicine down and ran over to check his pulse.
Tao Mo was stunned by his grip, “What's wrong?”
The doctor said, “You don't look well, you're sweating like rain, I thought you were sick but it's just a false alarm.” He turned around and continued to grab the medicine but Tao Mo grabbed him back. How's he doing?”
The doctor followed his gaze and saw Gu-She sitting calmly on a chair with his eyes closed and said, “It's just a flesh wound, no harm done.”
“But he's lost a lot of blood.” Tao Mo was worried.
The doctor says, “How much blood is this? It won't kill you.”
Tao Mo was relieved to see that he was relaxed and not faking.
When the doctor had taken the medicine and paid for it, he approached Gu-She and whispered, “Are you alright? Do you want to rest for a while, or do you want to go back first?”
Gu-She slowly opened his eyes, stood up by the armrest, “Let's go.”
Tao Mo saw him shaking and rushed to help him.
Gu-She shrank slightly in the arm and didn't push him away after all.
Tao Mo put him on the horse in the carriage and carefully drove it back to the inn.
Master Jin and Lao Tao have already returned and are shocked to see Gu-She walk in with his arm wrapped.
Master Jin said, “How can that be?”
Gu-She: “Attacked.”
Master Jin and Lao Tao looked at each other and both saw the worry in each other's eyes.
Lao Tao said anxiously, “Where's Young Master and Hao Guozi?” If anything happens to Tao Mo, how will he explain to Master Tao in the afterlife? Thinking of this, he felt a surge of blood in his chest and the bloodthirsty impulses he had suppressed for so long were once again surging like waves of terror.
As he was fuming in his heart, Tao Mo came in from outside with a tired face.
“Young Master." Lao Tao stepped forward, making sure he was unharmed and then he was relieved to remember he came in alone.” Where's Hao Guozi?”
Tao Mo froze, remembered that Hao Guozi and Sang Xiaotu were still on the mountain, screamed and ran out.
Lao Tao immediately went after them.
Master Jin looked at the pale Gu-She and whispered: “Young Master Gu better go back to your room and rest first.”
Gu-She nodded. Even if Master Jin wanted to ask something, he wouldn't bother to answer right now.
