Love is More than a Word, Chapter 64: New enemy, Old Regret (1)...

How could he be the Demon Sect Elder and end up as a bodyguard?

Lao Tao's heart was greatly unhappy, nonchalantly said: “Is Young Master Gu trying to break the law by knowing the law?”

Gu-She said casually, “You're the one who did it, what's it to me?”

Tao Mo said, “You can't say that. If Lao Tao fails, the consequences will be disastrous.” Even though I knew Gu-She was a person, hearing him say such cold-hearted words, I couldn't help but feel uncomfortable. Besides, the person he is talking about is the one he cares about most.

Lao Tao was overjoyed to see Tao Mo refute Gu-She for himself and he didn't mind his underestimation, smiling and saying, “It's not that I'm not going to break out of jail, it's just that we haven't reached that point yet. Young Master Gu is Mr. Yichui's top pupil, he is quick-witted and eloquent, so if Young Master Gu is the one to take over the case, it won't be difficult.”

Gu-She: “I never go to court.”

Lao Tao acted surprised and said, “If Young Master Gu doesn't go to the court, why did he join Mr. Yichui's disciples?”

Gu-She said, “You are endowed with great martial arts skills and why did you enter Tao Residence?”

Lao Tao's eyes narrowed.

It seems that Gu-She's previous provocations were all because of this sentence. Gu-She isn't one to meddle in other people's affairs. For example, when he (Lao Tao) brought Tao Mo to the inn, he didn't say anything but now he's targeting himself in every way, is it because he's suspicious of he because he showed his kung fu?

Lao Tao secretly tried to read his mind but he said in a nonchalant manner, “Master Tao has a debt of gratitude to me. Does Mr. Yichui owe you a debt of gratitude as well?”

Gu-She said, “I admire Mr. Yichui's talent.”

They were both talking so well, it made people nervous.

Master Jin stepped in to smooth things over and said, “Anyway, let's figure out how to help the woodcutter.”

Tao Mo was surprised: “And the Master Advisor approves of helping him?”

Master Jin smiled bitterly and said, “It's done. How can I say no?” Tao Mo is his boss and if he wants to help, he has to follow. In fact, many people don't like the Master Advisors in the court, they think they are acting as accomplices to the judgment towards them but they don't know that the only reason they are acting as accomplices to the magistrate is that there is only judgment inside. The Master Advisors are good or bad depending on the Magistrate's attitude. Of course, there are also Master Advisors who are against the Magistrate but this is rare.

Tao Mo said, “So what does the Master Advisor think about reversing the case?”

Master Jin said, “It's not difficult to overturn a case. This is a murder case, it will first be reported to the Prefectural Magistrate, then submitted to the Governor-General for investigation and if they all find it correct, it will be sent to the capital. The more people here, the more chance there is of overturning the case.”

Tao Mo said, “In that case, we'll look for the Prefectural Magistrate first."

Gu-She said, “No, you have to go to the County Magistrate first.”

Tao Mo was stumped: “But the County Magistrate has clearly decided the case.”

Master Jin nodded and said, “Our law strictly forbids overreaching. If you want to overturn the case, you must start with the County magistrate. If he does not judge fairly, then he can appeal.”

Tao Mo was dumbfounded, “So what do we do now?”

Master Jin: “Please litigation master, write the pleadings.”

Everyone looked at Gu-She. He does not litigate cases in the courtroom but it wouldn't be hard to find someone in the same family to take on the case.

Gu-She didn't excuse himself and explained a few things to Gu Xiaojia.

Gu Xiaojia looked reluctant, pulled Sang Xiaotu aside and gave his earnest advice for a long time, before leaving reluctantly.

Tao Mo said, “I wonder when Gu Xiaojia will be able to invite the litigation master back, why don't we take a break first?”

Master Jin: “Can't rest.”

“Why?” Tao Mo asked nervously. Are they already being watched?

Master Jin said: “If his excellency wants to overturn the case, he has to produce evidence to do so. If not, even the litigation master's eloquence will be of no use in court.”

Lao Tao said, “Are you saying that the prefect won't take this case?”

Master Jin nodded, “Unless new evidence comes to light, or the prisoner retracts his confession, the County Magistrate can refuse to accept it.”

Lao Tao chimed in, “Actually, it's not hard to get the prisoner to retract his confession.”

“It's not hard to retract a confession but it's not useless.” Master Jin, “in all the cases I've had, no one has ever retracted a confession based on the prisoner's word. People are afraid of death and prisoners are human, so no matter how happy they are to confess, as time goes on, the fear of death grows and they slowly find ways or excuses to retract their confessions. In this case, the Prefectural Magistrate Court is most likely not convinced.”

Tao Mo: “So what new evidence are we going to find?”

Master Jin said, “It would be best if we can find the suspect. If not, then find a reason why the woodcutter couldn't have killed the man.”

Hao Guozi high-fived: “Like evidence that he wasn't there at the time.”

Master Jin smiled, “That's right.”

Tao Mo: “Well, then, let's go find his two sons. Maybe they can testify.”

Master Jin said: “The son has to be found but it is preferably to find a passer-by who has no connection with the accused. After all, the son is his blood relative and may bear false witness for the sake of filial piety.”

Hao Guozi snorted, “The father went to be a scapegoat to pay off his gambling debts yet they never showed up, what kind of filial piety could such a person expect?”

Master Jin said, “Let's not jump to conclusions, let's find them.”

Lao Tao said, “In that case, we'll split up into two groups.”

“Not two ways, three ways.” Master Jin, “you find the evidence, I'll find the man.”

“Who?”

“Master Advisor,” sighed Master Jin, “he's seen me in court and if I don't greet him, I'm afraid I'll arouse his suspicions. Besides, I might be able to get some information out of him.”

Lao Tao said, “In that case, let's split up into three groups. Young Master, you...”

Tao Mo silently stomps away at Gu-She with both feet.

“You go with me.” Lao Tao turned a blind eye, “and asked Young Master Gu to go with Sang Xiaotu.”

Gu-She murmured, “When did I say I was going?”

Lao Tao stifled and then said, “In that case, Young Master and Hao Guozi will go with him to the vicinity of the crime. I'll go on my own and look for his two sons.” After a pause, he glanced at Gu-She and said, “Young Master Gu, please rest well at the inn.”

Gu-She stayed silent.

Master Jin and Lao Tao left backward and forwards in a hurry.

Tao Mo asked Hao Guozi to find out the route first and was about to rent the carriage when they saw the Gu Residence's horse the carriage stop leisurely in front of them. The driver of the carriage is Sang Xiaotu.

The carriage door opened, Gu-She sat inside and with a hook of his finger he motioned, “Come up.”

Tao Mo climbed onto the carriage on his hands and knees.

Hao Guozi wanted to go to the carriage with Tao Mo but Sang Xiaotu grabbed him by the hem of his shirt.

“I don't know the way.” Sang Xiaotu whispered.

Hao Guozi looked at the carriage, looked at him, sighed quietly and took over the reins.

In the carriage compartment, Tao Mo was torn between Gu-She's side and his former throne but finally chose the original throne.

“I thought you said you weren't going?”

Gu-She slowed down, “When did I say that?”

When Tao Mo thinks about it, he seems to be saying, “When did I say I was going?” That is, he neither said he was going, nor did he say he wasn't going. He looked at him, his heart swelling with pleasure, hung his head and whispered, “I thought you wouldn't want to meddle in this.”

“It's a lazy affair indeed.” Gu-She.

Tao Mo looked up at him, “Then why do you care?”

Gu-She said, “When did I say I'd care?”

Tao Mo froze again, “But you're not now...”

“I just stopped by to give you a lift.”

Tao Mo sighed softly, “Actually, this wasn't supposed to involve you in any way.”

Gu-She was silent.

“It might be dangerous.” Tao Mo's voice is low, “and he must be rich and powerful to buy off the magistrate. If he kills Wan Feng, it means he's ruthless. If it comes down to it, he'll get you in trouble.”

Gu-She said, “If so, why are you meddling in this nosy business?”

Tao Mo didn't hesitate to say, “I told you, I want to be a good officer.”

“What you are doing is not what a good officer would do.”

“Maybe.” Tao Mo leaned his head against the carriage wall, rocking gently as the carriage wheel rolled, “and anyway, I wanted to save him.”

The carriage was filled with silence.

Tao Mo felt a rush of sleep and was about to fall asleep, when in a haze he heard a cold male voice say, “Let me help you.”
