I’ll Still Love You Even if You’re a Man 2, Chapter 91: Just the wrong place
He didn't ask An-Ziyan, he couldn't ask but the answer came to him two days later. In the middle of the night, there was a deafening knock on the door and Mai Ding woke up, sat up and turned on the bedside lamp. Mai Ding stammered and asked An-Ziyan, “Tell me honestly, are you in debt to a loan shark?”
An-Ziyan gave Mai Ding a kick: “Go open the door.”
“Me go? Will there be any danger?”
“That's why you're called.”
“You want me to die!” The noise outside continued, as if it wouldn't stop until the door was opened and An-Ziyan lifted the covers and walked out.
“I didn't know you were good at matchmaking.” Her tone was full of sarcasm and anger and Mai Ding couldn't understand what was going on.
“Such matters are none of my business.”
“None of your business? None of your business is all it takes? Is Uncle Fu in love with that girl?”
An-Su couldn't control her emotions and when she said Uncle Fu's name, her voice shook. Mai Ding is not a fool, he saw her feelings in An-Su's eyes, was it because of An-Ziyan's fleeting look when he saw Uncle Fu and Ji Meng leaving that day? Did he understand something with just a glance?
An-Su let go of An-Ziyan and sat down on the sofa, mumbling, “I don't believe it. I've been waiting for him for so many years and he's with another woman... He's probably just a hothead, isn't he?” Mai Ding had never seen An-Su like this before, the pride in her bones was gone and she was weak and humble in the face of love and sometimes, love is a terrible thing. Mai Ding felt bad and he wanted to comfort An-Su but he knew nothing he could say would make her feel better.
“You're drunk, I'll take you home.”
“I don't want to go home! What are you doing home!” Despite her resistance, An-Ziyan dragged her out the door, turned to Mai Ding and said, “Go to bed yourself.” He closed the door and left without waiting for an answer. He could still hear An-Ziyan's loud noises and his mind exploded until An-Ziyan came back and frowned when he saw her sitting on the couch.”
“Where is she?”
“She fell asleep in bed.”
“Is she okay?”
“Just drinking too much.”
Mai Ding paced back and forth in front of An-Ziyan, he does this when he's anxious: “I can't sleep, I have too many questions in my head, doesn't Uncle Fu have kids? I thought he was a decent guy by the way he looks. I'm going to beat him up. I'm going to beat him up.”
“Who can you beat?”
“But... He played with your sister, don't you feel angry?”
“Watch your language.” When An-Ziyan went back to the bedroom, Mai Ding was about to open his mouth but then An-Ziyan said, “First of all, Uncle Fu just always thought of Su as his sister.”
“What about his wife?”
An-Ziyan lay back on the bed and said without missing a beat, “Five years ago, she died in childbirth.” He felt guilty for his assumptions and crawled into bed, “Didn't he realize his sister's feelings for him? Uncle Fu and Ji Meng hadn't known each other very long, so I thought we should side with the sister, fix them up and everyone would be happy.”
“You're worrying again.” When An-Ziyan turned off the bedside lamp, Mai Ding still looked at him in the darkness, his eyes shining brightly: “Because she's your sister.” An-Ziyan dragged Mai Ding over and put his head on her arm, teasing: “You love me a little too much.”
“The Narcissist.”
Mai Ding had a renewed sense of duty, to make his sister happy, so that An-Ziyan would be happy too.
The next day, Mai Ding called Bai Xiaosi during his break at work and asked her about her past. He had to admit that his ex-girlfriend knew more about An-Ziyan's past than he did and he was even grateful that An-Ziyan had an ex-girlfriend.
Before, when An-Su wouldn't tell anyone, Bai Xiaosi wouldn't tell anyone either but now that Mai Ding knew, Bai Xiaosi wanted to help An-Su, so he told Mai Ding.
When An-Su was a child she liked Uncle Fu but he always treated her as his sister, so she wanted to wait until she grew up but before she was fully grown up Uncle Fu got married and An-Su was devastated, she kept her feelings to herself until Uncle Fu's wife died. Uncle Fu didn't want to delay An-Su, he made it clear to her that he and An-Su were impossible, that he was only treating her as his sister, that he was only her grandfather's housekeeper, that he wasn't good enough for An-Su but An-Su wouldn't listen and waited for him in silence.
Mai Ding learns a lot about his sister that he didn't know, that it's not impossible for her and Uncle Fu to be together, that she's not his sister, that maybe Uncle Fu thinks of his grandfather as a benefactor, that he's married with a child and that he'd be doing his family and his grandfather a disservice if he stayed with An-Su. Once they get over these problems, there's a chance that they can be together and it's a complicated love story and Mai Ding wants to make it work. And when he thought about it, it made him feel better.
