Love is More than a Word, Chapter 74: Strike First (2)...
It was not far to go from the Tang City Prefecture and only after half a day's drive from Tangyang County. Tao Mo woke up early in the morning, put on his official clothes and Hao Guozi cleaned himself up before taking Master Jin and Lao Tao out.
Although Master Jin is in Tangyang county, he has been to the Prefectural Magistrate's court several times, so he has some connections in the city and can help in case of any problems. Lao Tao also said that the Demon Sect Elder's name is not just for nothing, if you look around Tangyang County, you can't find anyone who can fight with him for more than a hundred miles. Adding the errand boy Hao Guozi to the mix, even if the Prefectural Magistrate's ill intent is large, Tao Mo won't suffer much.
But when he reached the door, he was stopped by Gu Xiaojia. He looked at Tao Mo with wide eyes and said, “What are you doing early in the morning?”
After burying Yiyu last time, Tao Mo drew Gu-She a little closer to his heart and answered honestly: “Go to the Tang City Prefecture to see the Prefectural Magistrate."
Gu Xiaojia looked at him suspiciously, “Do what?”
Tao Mo: “The Prefectural Magistrate wants to see me.”
Lao Tao, impatient with Gu Xiaojia's questioning, interrupted, “Young Master, it's late, time to depart.”
Tao Mo was surprised to see Gu Xiaojia waiting at the courthouse early in the morning, “You're here to see me?”
Gu Xiaojia said absent-mindedly, “Young Master was afraid you were still sad and asked me to come see you.”
Tao Mo's heart warmed up.
Gu Xiaojia didn't care how excited he was, he just ran away.
Tao Mo and the others were on the carriage.
Master Jin, while getting on the carriage, muttered to himself, “I wonder if Gu-She will come.” He's been watching how Gu-She treats Tao Mo these past few days. Although he doesn't know why the noble Gu-She, the Young Master Gu suddenly fell in awe with Tao Mo, the County Magistrate, who was a shaky and illiterate official but it's true that Gu-She was always interested and involved in all aspects of Tao Mo's life.
The history of Gu-She, the Gu Residence and Mr. Yichui are both secretive but in his opinion, Lu Zhenxue is not as good as them.
After the carriage had traveled for about half an hour, they heard the sound of hoofs approaching.
Lao Tao lifted the curtain and looked outside and there were Gu-She and Gu Xiaojia.
He saw Gu-She's blue clothes and wide sleeves fluttering in the wind, unexplainable and unrestrained.
Two horses soon caught up with the carriage. Hao Guozi saw it was them and immediately stopped the horses.
Tao Mo poked his head out and was surprised and delighted to see Gu-She. At first he heard Master Jin's whispering and although he was expecting it, he wasn't sure about it but then Gu-She actually came.
Gu-She turned his horse over and walked over to the carriage.
Tao Mo tried to get out of the carriage but Gu-She held him down and got on the carriage.
Lao Tao frowned at this.
The carriage is not very spacious, Lao Tao, Master Jin and Tao Mo are already sitting tightly, plus one addition of Gu-She, it's almost as if they're neck to neck.
Master Jin looked at Lao Tao.
Tao Mo looked at Gu-She.
Lao Tao looked at Gu-She.
Gu-She also looked at Lao Tao.
There was a spark in their eyes that no one else could see.
The atmosphere in the carriage was delicate.
Hao Guozi outside suddenly added, “What are you also doing coming up here?! The carriage will collapse! It can't carry all these people.”
Gu Xiaojia said, “Then you ride the horse.”
Hao Guozi shouted, “This is my horse and my carriage, why should I ride a horse? If you're going, you're going!”
Gu Xiaojia giggled, “You are not going to be, is it?”
“Whether I will or not, I'm not going!” Hao Guozi pouted.
“You go and tie those two horses to the carriage, so they'll pull faster. How long is it going to take for your two old horses to pull the carriage?” Gu Xiaojia didn't bother with him for the first time.
Hao Guozi said: “My horse is not familiar with your horse, so putting them together will only add to the chaos.”
“How did you know it would add to the mess if you didn't try it?”
“I know even if I don't put it in!”
Everyone in the carriage listened in silence and no one said a word. Finally, Lao Tao couldn't listen any longer, got out of the carriage, got on the horse, “Don't delay the journey!”
Master Jin saw Gu-She looking at him and smiled bitterly: “Young Master Gu I appreciate your kindness but I don't know how to ride a horse.”
Tao Mo said awkwardly, “I instead... won't.”
Gu-She spoke up, “Go ride the horse.”
He didn't say who it was but how could Gu Xiaojia not know what he meant after all those years in his presence? He got off the carriage, got on the other horse.
Settled down, the group finally settles down and continues on to the Tang City Prefecture.
From Tangyang to the Tang City Prefecture, Master Jin is a seasoned veteran of the short passage. He ended up on the carriage shaft with Hao Guozi. It was a bit windy and cold outside but without Gu-She, it was easy to breathe easy.
In this way, only Tao Mo and Gu-She are left in the carriage.
Tao Mo's mind is a tangled mess of nervousness, shyness and joy and he can only try not to look at Gu-She so as not to reveal his own thoughts.
“Did you sleep well?” Gu-She asked.
“Yes.” Tao Mo said one word in a row, stammering.
Gu-She said, “Do you know what the Prefectural Magistrate wants from you?”
Speaking of business, Tao Mo steadied himself, saying, “I don't know. Just got an invitation from him.”
Gu-She was not familiar with the officials of the cities and counties. Although Tangyang County is close to the Tang City Prefecture but because Tangyang County litigation masters are numerous, it is recognized as a hard bone, so the Tang City Prefecture’s Magistrate has always been able to ignore this place. If you don't want to ask, don't ask. If you have to, take him to the Tang City Prefecture and ask. Tao Mo seems to be in a situation where it seems like it's a must ask.
Hao Guozi suddenly called out from outside, “Could it be that he wants the Young Master to be promoted?”
Master Jin sneered, “Fanciful. Where does the Prefectural Magistrate get the power to determine promotions? A recommendation Is what he can do at best. With no qualifications, no track record, no background, the Prefectural Magistrate would not recommend his excellency unless he's larded in the head?” he said and realized that what he had said sounded like sarcasm and chided himself for being out of line. Maybe it was because Tao Mo was usually so easy-going that he didn't seem to be offended at all by his ridicule. However, Tao Mo was easy going but none of the people around him, from Lao Tao to Gu-She, were easy-going, so it would be very bad if he made them feel bad about themselves because of what he said. He added: “After you've been in Tangyang for a year and a half, the Prefectural Magistrate will recommend you if you have outstanding performance.”
Hao Guozi said, “If you didn't want to assess the assessment first?”
Master Jin said, “That's possible.” The test he wanted was different from the one Hao Guozi wanted. All local officials like to develop cronies to consolidate their power, to establish their own territory. He's wondering if the Prefectural Magistrate means it.
Gu-She seems to have said something in there and because he spoke so softly, Master Jin and Hao Guozi couldn't hear it.
The only ones who could have heard were Lao Tao, who was out riding his horse and Tao Mo, who was in the carriage.
Lao Tao has excellent internal strength and he's been following the carriage of horses.
Tao Mo, however, because Gu-She said this with his face very close to his. It seems that he is just shifting his position to make himself more comfortable because after all, the horse the carriage is not as comfortable and luxurious as the Gu Residence's horse the carriage. It's just that after Gu-She had moved into this position, he didn't move.
“After I meet him, I'll take you for a walk.”
Tao Mo's heart was pounding and his head nodded several times involuntarily.
Gu-She said, “I'm going to sleep for a while.”
Tao Mo nodded again, then felt his shoulders sink and Gu-She's head was looking over his shoulder. His body almost stiffened to stone, Tao Mo didn't even dare to move a toe. It only took an incense stick to burn and his whole body felt sore and achy but his heart was so sweet, he couldn't wait to spend this moment in the afterlife.
After sitting for a long time, he couldn't hold on any longer, so he moved his legs a little.
Gu-She didn't react.
He moved his hips again, moved back a few inches.
Gu-She was still not responding.
Tao Mo breathed a sigh of relief and tried to move but the weight on his shoulders suddenly disappeared. He turned around and there was Gu-She staring blankly at him.
“Is it done already?” Gu-She asked.
Tao Mo froze, realized what he was referring to, immediately sat down on his knees against the carriage wall, and nodded, “Okay.”
Gu-She looked at him, fell back to sleep on his shoulder.
Having been leaned on too long, long enough to become numb, Tao Mo felt as if the weight on his shoulders was lighter this time than last time.
After sitting for a while longer, Tao Mo suddenly remembered that he hadn't asked Gu-She why he was here. He turned his head sideways, looked at Gu-She's beautiful sleeping face, and suddenly felt that the answer was no longer important to him.
