“Da-Ren!” Yan Mo called Yuan Zhan who was on his way out of the tent.
Yuan Zhan turned around.
“Are you going without breakfast?” Actually, he was the one who was hungry.
Yuan Zhan, “Go to the prey on the road” It means there is no prey and no food.
Dear master, aren’t you useless? It’s so pitiful that there is no stock of food for the family to eat for breakfast.
Yan Mo hid the contempt and smiled. “Yuan Da-Ren, I sincerely suggest that you take some big scorpion-leaves from the shed behind the quake when you go. If you were injured on the road, you can chew it before laying it over the wound to stop the bleeding.”
“I know”
“Da-Ren!”
Yuan Zhan impatiently turned around for the second time, “What else do you want to say?”
“In addition to those leaves. I can tell you some common herbs. When you are on the road and manage to come across it, you can pick them up. I can still process them for later use.”
Yuan Zhan narrowed his eyes and glared fiercely. With a hint of ridicule, he said: “Alternative food? Do you still need it?”
Yan Mo’s smile deflated. The shyness dissolve to the back of his mind.
Yuan Zhan suddenly turned around and walked over to Yan Mo. He forcefully squeezed the boy’s face, “Well, what do you need the herbs for?”
The corner of Yan Mo’s mouth twitched before he smiled. “Yuan Da-Ren, then you listen.” Yan Mo listed a few herbs and insect shapes he needed.
For Gusuibu each side has large leaves with the leaflets grow opposite; the leaves are long with cusps edges; the stems are short and shaped like fish bones.
Sambucus: leaves are alternate to each other and grow directly on the base without a stem; leaves are obliquely oblong; flowers are small but numerous and opens up into pieces that resembles a star, sometime white but mostly vermillion; fruits are the size of small eggs.
Achyranthes...
Yan Mo stopped explaining after seeing the foggy look on Yuan Zhan’s face. He asked: “Can you remember, Da-Ren?”
Yuan Zhan refuses to admit that he didn’t understand. His face was blank and unreadable: “Troublesome”
Yan Mo looked at his right palm which did not glow. He knew that the man opposite him remembered nothing. Yan Mo held back the urge to bash the man’s head. With a pleading eyes, he carefully spoke: “Da-Ren, I can draw it down. Can you give me some smooth piece of wood? Give me firewood that has not burnt completely from the fire pit.”
“...Da-Ren”
Yuan Zhan impatiently left for a while before coldly coming back. He threw a piece of wood twelve centimeters long by eight centimeters wide by one centimeter thick.
“Da-Ren, the branches in the fire pit...”
Yuan Zhan went out again and grabbed a few charred branches and hard firewood before coming in: “Hurry up, the horn will be blown soon and those who did not arrive in time will be punished.”
“Yes.” Yan Mo tried to ignore the ugly look on his master’s face and grabbed the front half of the carbonized branches and hurriedly drew on the chips.
Wood chips; he doesn’t know how Yuan Zhan cut and polished them but the surface is smooth with quite a few burrs.
Yan Mo recalls several herbs he desperately needs and drew them on the wood chips as well as some common herbs. He drew as many as possible on the wood chips.
He neither learned drawing when he was a child nor naturally gifted in this area. After going to college for summer vacation, he followed a professor who like to go to Da Shan to do a freelance clinic. He found that a student who seemed to be very ordinary in class could draw the desired herbal shape to help the local people, and he could help but admire as the rarity.
In the following years, when he followed the professors gongs and drums to make a profit, he became more and more aware that in some places an illustration was more and more useful that words. For this reason, he began to study drawing at the age of twenty-six. He practice everyday without interruption.
After 13 years of tempering, he was sure he can’t draw. Realistic drawing was impossible but drawing some herbal shapes that have long been printed on his mind was easy.
Yuan Zhan took the drawn wood chips and saw the various plants on the surface. He couldn’t stop his eyebrows from rising. He assumed that when his little slave said he was going to draw the latter will draw round circles with added sticks on the wood chips. Yuan Zhan didn’t expect...
“Is there a bug you need?”
“Yes, those bugs can also be use as medicine, and the effect is very good.”
“The drawing skill was also taught by your priests?” The Salt Mountain tribe’s priests are so powerful? Why can’t he remember ever meeting a priest who can draw with precision?
“Yes.”
Liar! If the Salt Mountain priests have such skills, he would have long been to the city to serve as a god. Why would he stay in a tribe to live a precarious life? Even if you cannot go to the upper city, the lower city’s shrine is also good.
Yuan Zhan kept a straight face and did not let the teenager see the surprise and disbelief.
The boy is probably still young, and the priest didn’t have the time to explain just how powerful this skill is so he will never tell the boy this.
If he let the teenager know that he can be worshipped by having this skill. The slave may leave. This is absolutely not allowed.
How can he allow it, the slave belongs to him!
Poor Yan Mo, who was a fighting geese all the time, was also blinded by the geese today.
1] BookAddictszii: this means he was lying all the time and didn’t know he was lied to.
It was also because of this initial thoughts that Yan Mo thought it was very convenient to master the skill on drawing; however, he didn’t know how great it was in this time. There were many who doesn’t mingle with the locals and didn’t know there are shrines built for artists. He didn’t know that people who possess such skills are very popular with the temple.
The most important thing is that he still has contempt for this young master and didn’t take the latter seriously. Just wait for his wounds to heal before he gets rid of him. With such mindset, naturally, he has no intention of observing Yuan Zhan’s expression.
So...it’s time for him to give Yuan Zhan a few years of workable slavery.
Yuan Zhan held the pieces of wood as he walked out of the tent. When he went out, he carefully and reverently wrapped the wooden pieces in the animal skin and hung it around his waist.
In the tent, Yan Mo looked at his bright palm and smiled. He drew four plants and two kinds of insects. The Guide gave him a deduction of six points to his scum value. He will now return to 100 million points if he can subtract one more point. Unfortunately, the woods were too small and he has no space draw anymore.
On the first day after Yuan Zhan’s departure. Yan Mo didn’t go anywhere and stayed in the tent. He injured his leg; it was best choice to remain immobile.
Cao Ting brought him a meal and carried him twice behind the tent to solve some physiological problems.
Yan Mo took advantage of this natural toilet and had to praise the wit of the antediluvian people.
In a place less than 20 meters away from the tent area, there is a natural land fissure. This fissure is not wide, just several palms of distance; like the long crater in the old toilet.
The men, women and children in Yuan tribe only needed to pay little attention to it; easy to manage and convenient to use. If one is too lazy, they would just dig a pit near their tents and cover it with soil. This type of quick solution is very popular and many people can do it anywhere...such an unhygienic place, no wonder they are always accompanied by a variety of stench.
Yan Mo’s original body has adapted to this dirty and messy environment and has become accustomed to the various odors. Yon Mo, who was very concern about the environment and his own health, was forced to get acquainted to these various stenches.
For a tribe who wants to save water and does not wash in the morning and the evening, if you want things to get done adequately, you will have more than enough energy.
Yan Mo didn’t just lay down all day. He turned the pile of rubbish and wanted to see if there were anything useful around. As a result, not only did he find nothing, but he also caught a bunch of bugs.
Getting rid of the worms was good. Some of the worms were long such as a scorpion-shaped polypod; some of the worms he recognized and others, he didn’t.
He wanted to find the Earth Beetle among these bugs. The Earth Beetle is also known as the bandit. It likes dark and moist humus and usually grows under the old-fashion earthen house base and corners. It’s powdered form can treat the inflammation, common colds, bruises, varicosities, osteodystrophy...
The female Earth Beetles are the only one with medicinal value. Identifying them is easy, the females do not have wings in contrast to male beetles. That being said, it is difficult to conclude that male Earth Beetles do not have medicinal value because males are not only lesser, but, once they become an adult, they will grow wings and fly. Once they are in their adult form, they become flexible and difficult to catch. Adult Male Earth Beetles also have a short life span and immediately die after mating.
Yan Mo looked at the numerous bugs and sighed. If the second article of the Guide can be used now then he can identify, one by one, whether the bugs are useful to him. If he wants the Guide to help in identifying creatures then he must first reduce his scum value. One hundred points plus one point is equal to 101 points of reduction to his 100 million scum value.
After he didn’t find what he was looking for in the tent, Yan Mo was not discouraged. He asked Cao Ting a lot of question including things he needs to pay attention to in this tribe as well as the nearby water and soil entailing their biological characteristics.
At the same time, he didn’t forget to teach Cao Ting the different of medical treatment. He told her to go to the tent and pick up a big fresh loquat leaves which can be used as a wound dressing. It was for this reason that he reduced his scum value by three points.
On the second day after Yuan Zhan’s departure, Yan Mo stared at his wound for a long time.
Cao Ting who was changing his medicine and affixing the splint, suddenly sighed.
Yan Mo looked up at her, “Sister, what’s the matter?”
Cao Ting squatted with a straw rope and shook her head, “Da He may not be able to make it.”
“Wasn’t the priests Da-Ren already helping him to heal?” Yan Mo thought that this Da He situation not only increased his scum value but also hurt him by feeling the sensation of being burned every night. He had no good will. It wasn’t exactly bad to hope for the man’s early death. Naturally, he didn’t want to take the initiative to offer a helping hand. This was the reason he never mentioned Da He to Cao Ting even though he knew well that helping the person will reduce his scum value.
Yes, he is angry! What can he do about it? Anyway, he is a scum.
Cao Ting sighed again. “There are not many herbs. Da He is wounded like this. If he cannot get any better, the priests will not waste valuable medicine on him. Last time, the priest went and cut off his broke arm. It is sanctioned by the Law to burn wound to stop its bleeding, but with the big hole in the abdomen...there is no way. The priest tried to rub the God soil-water but it was no use.”
“God soil-water”
“Ah, that is the secret medicine passed down from one generation to another by the tribe priest. Everyone calls it the god soil-water. Not only can it treat many injuries, but it can also clean turbid water. With an enamel fur, the fur will be particularly soft and beautiful.”
Yan Mo’s heart moved, “Is that kind of god rock like a transparent crystal?”
“I haven’t seen it before. I only heard that the priest used it as a kind of sparkling powder.”
The effects is very similar to alum. Is there something nearby, an Alum mine? Where does the priest here occasionally acquire some?
The use of alum power to stop bleeding is incorrect. It will eventually lead to brain damage, burns, vomiting, diarrhea, organ collapse and even death.
Suddenly thinking of it, Yan Mo quickly asked: “Do you use this kind of water in the family?”
Cao Ting laughed. “Do you think there is unlimited god rock for everyone? If there is a shortage of water will you throw it on grassy beach? The priest use god rock to clean water and the water is only available to the chiefs, the priests, and the elders; even 3rd Rank warriors cannot get too much of it let alone slaves.”
That is fortunate! Yan Mo was relieved. If the god rock is used, although this thing can clean water, the aluminum contained in it is very harmful to the human body. For example, Long-term used of alum-purged water can cause anemia, osteoporosis and brain atrophy.
“Are the priest here become demented when they are old as if they do not remember anything?” Yan Mo asked.
Cao Ting was surprised. “How do you know? I have occasionally heard Da-Ren talk about it. He said that priests in the tribe will transfer their knowledge and experience to the new priest when they reach a certain age. The old priest’s soul will then ascend and completely disappear leaving an empty vassal with no memories. They can’t even feed themselves.”
Is this not the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease resulting from brain atrophy (BookAddictzzii: the brain literally shrinks) the priests here are all so clever that they were able to explain their own symptoms. They compiled such episode that not only does it not reduce their prestige but also defied their existence.
“Little Mo”
“Hmmm?”
Cao Ting hesitated: “Can I tell others about the loquat leaves to stop bleeding?”
“Of course” I hope you tell others, “In addition to stop bleeding, it can also clear away fever and detoxify harmful substances, reduce swelling and hemorrhoids, etc. Oh, it can also be eaten as wild vegetables.”
“What? It can still be eaten?”
Yan Mo nodded.
Cao Ting was ecstatic, but also sad. “But the big plant behind the shed is not enough...”
“You can look for it elsewhere such as hillsides, grasslands and wastelands. It is more likely to grow in places near water. There more they are the likelier there is a source of water nearby, the more unusual it is. If you find one piece, you can find another piece.”
“Great! Little Mo, can I go with He Tu to pick up the Cirsium plant?” Cao Ting explained, “He Tu is the wife of Da He.”
Yan Mo was not surprised at hearing the name of Da He’s wife from Cao Ting. The teenager’s memory told him the status of women here is not high and only a little better than the slaves in a way that they can receive food distribution from the tribe. When the female slaves have children with their masters, their sons are regarded as descendants of the tribe, and they can obtain tribal food distribution, but once there is food shortage then their food allotment is taken and they are the first ones to die.”
If it is a child born from two slaves, it is still considered a slave.
“I taught you; as long as I didn’t specifically forbid it, you can teach others at will.”
Cao Ting was elated, “Little Mo, you are very good.”
Yan Mo revealed a smile that said ‘I am a good person’
“Then, do you have a way to make Da He get a little better?”
“Do you want me to help Da He?” Yan Mo was not surprised.
Cao Ting nodded and shook her head. She said: “You do not have to pressure yourself; even the priest cannot cure him. He Tu has already accepted his death. I just want to let Da He’s last days to not be so painful. Can you do that? I heard some priest can make the injured patients stay asleep until they die. I will sneak you away and will not let the priest know.”
Ya Mo didn’t want to go for three reason.
First, it is difficult for a cleaver woman to have no rice. The kinds of surgical tools and drugs he needs to treat Da He are not available. It is impossible to cure Da He’s injury with a few cirsium plants, and the present situation of Da He would likely lead to complication due to infection. In short, it is a serious situation; even if he returns from where he came, he may not be able to save this person.
Second, if he goes and he can’t cure Da He, maybe the damn banish Guide will give him another increment in scum value.
Third, even if he heals Da He, maybe he can reduce some of the scum value, but it may also attract the attention of the tribal priest.
But Yan Mo didn’t dare to refuse Cao Ting; he was afraid that he couldn’t say anything and the Banished Scum Guide would immediately add 10 scum points in the name of death.
“The purpose is to make Da He’s death less painful, then does it mean I don’t have to save him?” Yan Mo spoke in Chinese to his right hand.
The Guide did not answer him.
Going causes misery while not going also causes misery. What a terrible world! Yan Mo sneered in his heart.
Cao Ting did not know of Yan Mo’s psychological dilemma. Seeing him so quiet, she guessed he was afraid of causing trouble. She caressed his head and said: “If you can do it, then I think they will give you some meat as payment.”
“...Let’s go; why not? “ Isn’t it like euthanasia? He hasn’t done it yet
Thank you for translating this novel and with multiple updates to boot!!(((:
ReplyDeleteHehe Yan Mo to the rescue! XD
ReplyDeleteI'm re-reading this again!! ♡.. This is not the kind of story I usually read, think it's first time of its kind & I'm like enlightened? XD.... Cuz it's so different & so unpredictable... I love Yan Mo. although his not lovable sometimes...
ReplyDeleteI love Yan mo but adorable is the last thing I would ever associate with him.
DeleteThis is my first time reading a story with such vivid depiction of primitive tribe. I had a hard time since I am not good with disgusting scene but I am so intrigued with Yan Mo predicament and how Yuan Zhang gonna change. So far, the storyline is very good since it is not cliche.
